Save the Wall

Save the wall is a a group of seacoast residents that have joined to restore and preserve the "Isles of Shoals Humpbacks" whaling wall, the largest piece of public art in Portsmouth, NH.

The group was formed by Tom Heany, in June of 2008. The group now consists of 3-5 core members and an extended group of 25+.

The wall, painted by the artist known as Wyland, is in need of restoration due to graffiti, wall repairs that have impaired the mural, and the inevitable wear from exposure to the weather.

Why Save the Wall

  • It is the largest piece of public art on the seacoast
  • It provides a reminder of our responsibility to preserve the marine environment
  • It provides beauty to a blank wall and to an uninspiring parking lot
  • It is one of only 100 ever painted, with 17 already extinct
  • It is a unique piece of history, a gift from Wyland to Portsmouth

'If people see the beauty in nature, they will work to preserve it.''- Wyland
